Beyond the Horizon

This is already the fourth fiber‑art exhibition in the series Textile Art in the Museum, presented at the Anna and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz Museum in Stawisko.
The horizon — for some, nothing more than an optical illusion resulting from the Earth’s curvature — seems forever out of reach, just as Achilles can never quite overtake the tortoise. According to this view, we too will never arrive at that receding line. That is why it is worth focusing on what is close — what surrounds us every day. It is in proximity that we find our point of reference, bring order to reality, create procedures, rules, and rituals. In other words: culture, which helps us tame chaos.
Yet there are also those who — against all odds — attempt to reach the horizon, to pierce the vault of heaven with their heads and describe the worlds that lie beyond the boundaries of the known. They are the ones who discover new lands and bring us closer to other, fascinating (and sometimes terrifying) cultures. Thanks to them, what once seemed a fantasy becomes possible.
It is impossible to determine which of these attitudes is more important. Thanks to the first, the world retains its stability and we do not have to rediscover it anew each day; thanks to the second, it changes constantly and no longer resembles the world our grandparents knew.
In this exhibition, we wanted to show what lies on both sides of the horizon.
The works on display were created in a variety of techniques: classical tapestry, felting, textile printing, patchwork, as well as numerous original methods. Most of the pieces were made specifically for this exhibition. As in previous editions, the show features artists from different parts of Poland, primarily associated with the Textile Section of the Warsaw District of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers. Reaching beyond the thematic horizon, we decided to go even further and invited Ania Gilmore, an artist from Boston.
The exhibition was held under the patronage of the Warsaw District of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (OW ZPAP).
